As Christians, many of us want to do great things for God. Recently I was reading in I Samuel 18 where Saul is both jealous and afraid of David because it is obvious that God is with him. However when Saul offers David his daughter in marriage in order to have more control over David, David refuses on the grounds that he is lowly and poor and who is he to be the son-in-law of the king? Such humility and wisdom! How would I have responded? I probably would have felt like I'd been faithful to God and here is my reward. I deserve this!
How different God's Kingdom is from the world's ways. Doing great things for God, in my very finite mind, has me speaking to thousands! Filling stadiums and inspiring and encouraging many for Him! However, recently I met an older woman in Superstore. She was looking for nail polish and I went to help her find what she wanted. Her English was very broken and she was having a hard time. We connected and discovered that we both loved Jesus. She wept and wrapped her little arms around me and I, too, could hardly hold it together. When we spoke, she called me 'precious one'. How could I not be drawn to this tiny but mighty Saint? For many reasons, she said that she was very lonely and to find another Christian was from God. We agreed to meet and so this week, I will be connecting once again with this wonderful woman.
Doing great things for God? He says that for now, He wants me meeting with an elderly lady and we can encourage each other on our journeys. Yes, Lord! In your Kingdom, this is mighty indeed! I pray that You would keep my heart humble and wise so that I would see what's TRULY mighty in Your sight.
